British Sign Language is a native language of the United Kingdom and the first or preferred language of much of the country's Deaf community. It is a full language in its own right, with its own grammar and vocabulary, not a signed form of English. The British Sign Language Act 2022 recognised it as an official language of England, Wales and Scotland. Our BSL work centres on access rather than immigration: interpreting and translation that lets Deaf people take part in NHS appointments, court and tribunal hearings, and other public services on equal terms with hearing people. Around 151,000 people use BSL across the UK, of whom roughly 87,000 are Deaf.
