Croatian is a South Slavic language and the official language of Croatia, as well as one of the three official languages of Bosnia and Herzegovina and an official language of the European Union since 2013. It is written in the Latin alphabet. The standard is based on the Shtokavian dialect, which it shares with Serbian, Bosnian and Montenegrin, and the four remain largely mutually intelligible in speech; Croatia is also home to the distinct Kajkavian and Chakavian dialect groups. Around five to six million people speak Croatian, most of them in Croatia itself, with communities in neighbouring countries and a diaspora spread across Western Europe, the Americas and Australia.
